English Greyhound Derby

The English Greyhound Derby, also known as the williamhill.com Greyhound Derby for sponsorship purposes, is the most prestigious race on the UK calendar, with a history stretching back to 1927. Along with the Irish Greyhound Derby at Shelbourne Park, and the Scottish Greyhound Derby at Shawfield Stadium, it is arguably the biggest greyhound competition in the world.

Entry Badge won the first ever running at White City, which was built for the 1908 London Olympics. The Derby was run at the Great Stadium until 1984 when closure resulted in the Classic being moved to Wimbledon Stadium.

Only four greyhounds have won the title two times. Mick The Miller (1929-30), Patricias Hope (1972-73), Rapid Ranger (2000-01) and Westmead Hawk (2005-06).

The competition was sponsored from 2007 to 2009 by the bookmakers Blue Square, who had the naming rights to the event "The Blue Square Greyhound Derby". The event was previously sponsored by William Hill who renewed their involvement with greyhounds and the Wimbledon Stadium with a deal for 2010. The deal encompassed all major competitions at the south London track including the re-named "williamhill.com Greyhound Derby".[1]
